How to choose an area near the Forbidden City

The Forbidden City sits in the center of Beijing. The Jingshan hill is to the north, and the Wangfujing shopping district lies to the east. Before you look at hotels, learn how the palace works: you enter only at the Meridian Gate in the south, and you leave through Shenwumen in the north or Donghuamen in the east.

That means a hotel next to the north gate is not automatically close to your entrance. Think about your morning route first and your return trip second. This page names areas, not hotels, and it gives no room rates. Check current rates and cancellation terms on the booking page before you pay.

China's tourism portal describes Wangfujing as a retail and dining area with a car-free core. A government accommodation overview lists places to stay in Dongcheng, including near Wangfujing and Chongwenmenwai. Because Dongcheng is a whole district, a hotel there can still be a trip away from the gate.

What to weigh before you book

Five practical points for your hotel search.

Your morning route

Entry is only at the Meridian Gate, and the museum describes the approach from the south, along the Tongzihe roads. See the Meridian Gate guide for the entrance and the security check. Expect a security check before you step inside.

Time windows

A morning booking must check in by 12:00. An afternoon booking can check in from 11:00. The last entry is 16:00 from 1 April to 31 October and 15:30 from 1 November to 31 March. A late start from a distant hotel can cost you your slot.

Where you finish

The route runs from south to north, and you leave at Shenwumen in the north or Donghuamen in the east. If you want to end at Jingshan Park or the Wangfujing streets, the exit side matters for your return. See the route guide.

Getting around

The subway fare starts at CNY 3 for up to 6 km and rises with distance, to CNY 6 for 22 to 32 km. The Capital Airport Express costs a flat CNY 25 on the fare list, and that is not a price to the palace. Fares are from April 2025, so check them before you go.

Arriving by car

The museum has no car park of its own, and only limited public spaces are noted on Jingshan Houjie. Taxi access right up to the entrance is not guaranteed. Plan to finish the last stretch on foot or by subway.

Do not forget your passport

Wherever you sleep, bring the original passport you used to book. Foreign visitors reserve with a passport, only one main ticket is allowed per document and day, and tickets cannot be rebooked after purchase. Reservations open 7 days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time, so settle your dates before the hotel search is final.

If you are not sure that you can enter China visa-free, read the visa-free guide first. The right dates also depend on the season, which the best time guide covers.

Where to stay in Beijing: frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay for the Forbidden City?

There is no single best area. Wangfujing, to the east of the palace, suits dining and shopping. Choose by your route, because you enter in the south and leave in the north or east.

Is Wangfujing close to the Forbidden City?

It lies east of the museum, and the Donghuamen exit is on that side. The district is large, so the distance depends on where in it your hotel is. Check the map for your exact address.

Can I walk to the entrance from a hotel in Dongcheng?

Dongcheng is a whole district, and it contains areas such as Wangfujing and Chongwenmenwai. Whether you can walk depends on the specific address. Look at the route to the Meridian Gate in the south.

Should I stay on the north side near Jingshan?

It suits a visit to Jingshan Park, which lies north of the palace. It is not near the entrance, because that is at the Meridian Gate in the south. You can plan to end your route there.

Does the palace have parking?

The museum has no car park of its own, and public spaces on Jingshan Houjie are limited. Using the subway is the simpler way to arrive.
